Patriots' resolution on Venezuela breaks the cordon sanitaire
A joint resolution together with the EPP, the ECR and the Patriots group in the European Parliament creates a right-wing conservative majority.
The Patriots, together with the EPP and ECR, have tabled a joint motion for resolution on the situation in Venezuela. Although Renew members refused to vote, a comfortable majority adopted the resolution. “Just a couple of weeks into the parliamentary new term, the cordon sanitaire against the Patriots for Europe has fallen”, stated Patriots Vice-President Kinga Gál, emphasizing the importance of a stable right-wing conservative majority in the House. “This shows that the Patriots are a reliable and constructive partner, eager and able to bring about the change in European politics that our voters are so desperate to see”.
The joint resolution submitted to the vote issues legitimate criticisms of the electoral process that took place in July. Despite the promise of its leader to organize "free and fair" elections, by signing the Barbados Agreement in October 2023, and the attempts at rapprochement on the part of the European chancelleries, the Maduro regime continues to harden by keeping the country in a political and financial crisis. The joint EPP-ECR-Patriots resolution demonstrates the support for the Venezuelan people but also the desire for a future political negotiation leading to a democratic transition through the organization of free and transparent elections.
“It shows that the left side of the House would prefer to stick to the status quo and therefore voted against this resolution”, commented Gal. “However, it shows that right-wing and conservative majorities are possible and that we will continue to mobilize these majorities in order to initiate a trend turnaround in this House,” Gal emphasized. She pointed out that it is now primarily up to the EPP to support the majorities that are demanded by a majority of voters in the nation states at European level.
