Patriots for Europe Warns: Iceland's Vote is a Verdict on Brussels

Brussels, 31/08/2026 - Icelanders went to the polls on Saturday and said no. Asked whether their country should resume accession negotiations with the European Union, 52.8 percent voted against and 47.2 percent in favour, with a turnout of 82.5 percent. Patriots for Europe reads the result as a judgment not on Iceland’s future, but on what the Union has become.

The example of Iceland shows once again that joining the European Union is no longer desirable for economically successful and self-determined countries. Voters were asked to hand decisions over their own affairs to institutions far from Reykjavik, and they declined.

Iceland is not a marginal case. It is a prosperous Northern European democracy, closely tied to the continent through the European Economic Area, and it has now chosen to keep its distance from the Union itself. That choice is the verdict. Iceland is a stable and successful country that is dependent neither on the EU nor on its excessive bureaucracy and growing regulatory frenzy. The country proves that economic success, international cooperation and national sovereignty are possible even outside the European Union.

Patriots for Europe calls on the European institutions to accept the outcome without pressure or reinterpretation. Iceland is demonstrating once again that the future of Europe lies not in a centralist EU superstate, but in the cooperation of free and sovereign states.
