Patriots for Europe to Demand Plenary Debate on European Commission's Electoral Interference

Brussels, 04/03/2026 - Patriots for Europe formally request a plenary debate on the European Commission's interference in national elections across Europe, following the publication of a damning interim report by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.

The report reveals that the Commission held over 100 closed-door meetings with major social media platforms since at least 2020, successfully pressuring them to change their global content moderation rules — a practice that the Digital Services Act subsequently formalised and expanded, with documented interference in European elections disproportionately targeting conservative political content.

MEP Tom Vandendriessche, leading the initiative for Patriots for Europe, stated:

"The U.S. House report shows that under the DSA, the Commission intervened around national elections, pressuring platforms to police lawful political speech during campaign periods. This is not about 'disinformation' , but about controlling speech.

Last plenary, they refused a vote on whether to even have a debate. What do they have to hide? We are putting it back on the agenda. The Conference of Presidents will have to decide. The Commission must be held accountable. Free elections and freedom of expression are non-negotiable. "

Patriots for Europe, the third-largest political group in the European Parliament, considers this matter a direct threat to democratic integrity across Member States and will continue to press for full institutional accountability.
