Patriots for Europe Secure Signatures to Request Inquiry Committee on EU Corruption Scandals
Strasbourg 06/05/2025 - Patriots for Europe has successfully gathered the necessary signatures to formally request the establishment of a Committee of Inquiry on Transparency and Accountability (TRAC) in the European Parliament. This marks a critical step toward investigating deep-rooted corruption, undue influence, and institutional abuses within the EU’s highest ranks. The final decision now rests with the Parliament’s Conference of Presidents.
“We have now collected the required signatures to move forward,” announced Kinga Gál, First Vice President of the group. “The time has come to expose the serious failures within EU institutions and hold them to the same standards they demand of member states. For too long, they’ve ignored corruption in their own ranks while weaponizing the rule of law against democratically elected governments. That must change.”
Marieke Ehlers, Patriots MEP and a key supporter of the initiative, added: “We owe it to every European citizen to expose corruption and shine a light where secrecy thrives—an inquiry committee in the European Parliament to investigate scandals such as Qatargate and the NGO lobby loop is not just necessary, it’s long overdue.”
The proposed TRAC committee would investigate scandals such as Qatargate, Huaweigate, and Pfizergate, as well as illegal lobbying by EU-funded NGOs and foreign interference. It would also examine the lack of transparency in EU decision-making and the institutions’ failure to comply with their own accountability standards—criticized recently by the EU Court of Auditors. Europeans deserve to know what their money is being spent on.
TRAC would operate for an initial 12-month mandate, with powers to summon witnesses, access classified documents, and cooperate with law enforcement. Its final report would propose reforms to ensure accountability and restore public trust. As the initiative heads to the Conference of Presidents, the question remains:
