MERCOSUR: Von der Leyen Tramples on Democracy and Declares War on European Farmers

Brussels, 27/02/2026 - Today, the President of the European Commission announced the provisional application of the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement. This is an institutional power grab and a flagrant denial of democracy.

The European Parliament voted to refer this agreement to the Court of Justice of the European Union to examine its legality, a referral made possible by the initiative of Patriots for Europe. Yet the Commission has chosen to bypass this procedure entirely. Activating provisional application while the case is still pending before the Court is an insult to the rule of law. The so-called "transitional period" is nothing but political theatre to mask the imposition of a deal whose legal foundations are being challenged by the Parliament itself.

This decision is a direct attack on European farmers, already strangled by unfair competition, mounting regulations, and rising costs. The Mercosur agreement will flood the European market with products from producers who do not meet the same sanitary, environmental, or labour standards. This is not free trade. It is organised unfair competition that will devastate European agriculture.

Ursula von der Leyen acts as if the European Parliament, the Court of Justice, and the Member States no longer exist, and as if the law were merely optional. Patriots for Europe will mobilise every legal and political means at its disposal to block this provisional application, which amounts to a declaration of war on our farmers.
